RADICAL SUSTAINABILITY
Essential, drastic, necessary – these are just a few of the words that can best encompass radical sustainability. The term emphasizes the need for action on our part to continue doing what is right in order for the human race to survive without placing any more stress that can be felt long-term on the environment. The environment has suffered so much abuse as a result of our wanting to improve the state of human life and the economy supporting it that radical sustainability is almost a battle cry against further abuse. Without respect to what radical sustainability stands for, it is feared that the generations to come will enjoy very little of what natural resources are left and suffer much for the consequences brought about by the destruction of nature.
Radical sustainability involves drastic changes and moving back into simplicity, promoting a society that can sufficiently live on less in order to live more. It implies that by working together, many communities that are born out of the concept of radical sustainability can be built in preparation for those economies that can no longer hold up because they had not taken into account the need for preservation. This is not likely to happen, of course, but it is not a far-fetched possibility. The earth needs nurturing and it is our duty to give back what we have destroyed, thus the need for radical sustainability.
